PNCT expands straddle carrier fleet

Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) has placed an order for 20 hybrid Konecranes Noell straddle carriers, reinforcing its long-standing partnership with the equipment supplier and underlining its commitment to more efficient terminal operations.

The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2025, with delivery scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.

PNCT is one of the largest container terminals on the US East Coast and operates an all–Konecranes Noell straddle carrier fleet, with more than 200 units ordered to date. Following the introduction of its first hybrid straddle carriers in July 2022, the terminal reported strong operational performance, prompting further investment. In Q4 2024, PNCT ordered 15 hybrid machines, making the latest purchase its second major expansion of hybrid equipment.

“PNCT has been operating Konecranes Noell straddle carriers for decades and we are convinced by their performance and reliability,” said Charlie Ferlisi, director of engineering & equipment services at PNCT.

“We’ve already seen the benefits of the company’s hybrid drives, and this new investment is aimed at further reducing fuel consumption and operating with even higher efficiency overall.”

Each of the new straddle carriers is equipped with Konecranes’ eco-efficient hybrid-drive technology, which combines a diesel genset with a rechargeable battery. The machines will support ship-to-shore container handling, stacking operations and the loading and unloading of trucks and rail wagons.

Konecranes’ close relationship with PNCT is further reflected in its dedicated service location near Port Newark, including a fully equipped spare parts warehouse to support terminal operations. PNCT also operates Konecranes rubber-tyred gantry cranes and reach stackers.

“This is a significant repeat order from a major US customer that knows our straddle carrier technology inside out,” said Peter Kania, sales director, Port Solutions at Konecranes. “It demonstrates how well our hybrid equipment performs in demanding terminal environments.”
