Ports redefine digital resilience
Global shipping disruptions are accelerating a major shift in how ports view digital infrastructure, with port community systems (PCS) increasingly regarded as critical tools for maintaining trade resilience rather than simply improving operational efficiency.
Industry experts say recent geopolitical crises, including attacks in the Red Sea and instability around the Strait of Hormuz, have exposed the vulnerability of ports reliant on fragmented communications and manual coordination systems.
According to industry estimates, around 2,000 vessels were stranded during the recent Strait of Hormuz crisis, while continued attacks on shipping in the Red Sea forced operators to reroute vessels, adding weeks to transit schedules and disrupting global supply chains.
The growing instability is driving ports to strengthen digital coordination capabilities to maintain cargo flows during operational shocks.
“For years, efficiency was key when it comes to PCS,” said Alioune Ciss, chief executive of Webb Fontaine.
“However, today, the key is resilience. When shipping lanes shift overnight, policies change, and uncertainty increases, the strongest ports are the ones that are the most connected.”
PCS platforms connect shipping lines, customs authorities, terminals, freight forwarders and inland transport operators through a unified digital environment, enabling real-time coordination and visibility across port ecosystems.
Industry bodies including the International Association of Ports and Harbors and the World Customs Organization have called for greater interoperability between customs systems and PCS platforms to support secure trade flows during disruptions.
Ciss said future-ready PCS systems must move beyond documentation management and support predictive analytics, congestion forecasting and AI-enabled decision-making.
“Ports no longer need systems that simply digitise processes,” he said. “They need platforms capable of orchestrating responses when disruptions occur.”
The shift marks a broader transformation in global maritime logistics, where operational resilience is rapidly becoming the industry’s most important performance metric.
