Remote-controlled gantry crane first
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA)’s Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) has introduced three state-of-the-art remote-controlled gantry cranes.
Delivered by Liebherr, these cranes are designed to handle container ships of up to 16,000 TEU, setting new benchmarks in automated port equipment technology.
“The arrival of the first remote-controlled container gantry cranes marks a key step in the modernisation of our terminals at the Port of Hamburg,” said Angela Titzrath, CEO of HHLA.
“With this investment, we are strengthening the competitiveness of our facilities and laying the foundation to continue offering our customers outstanding services in the future. CTA has once again set industry standards with innovation and efficiency.”
Advanced automation
These towering gantry cranes, reaching up to 120 metres in height, will begin phased operations in 2025.
They incorporate advanced automation features, such as optical character recognition (OCR) for container tracking and semi-automated loading and unloading processes.
Operators will manage the cranes remotely from a high-tech control station, supported by automated assistance systems to enhance precision and safety.
The new cranes mark part of HHLA’s €1 billion investment in port infrastructure over the last five years and exemplify a commitment to sustainable innovation.
