Trelleborg modernises Mexican port navigation

Once completed, the project will be one of the world’s largest standardised maritime navigation efforts, setting a new benchmark for port infrastructure in Latin America.

“This project goes beyond just upgrading equipment, it’s about setting a new standard for pilotage throughout Mexico,” said Tommy Mikkelsen, managing director for navigation and piloting at Trelleborg.

“It will standardise navigation technology across all 25 ports, creating a cohesive ecosystem that enhances safety, consistency and operational efficiency on a national scale.”

Trelleborg’s SafePilot PPU includes independent heading functionality and a flexible dual-unit configuration, enabling uninterrupted operations and quick hardware swaps.

Trelleborg says the system allows pilots to operate more effectively through consistent procedures, reduced training complexity and increased overall reliability and safety. This addresses a longstanding issue in pilotage operations where differing systems across ports can hinder efficiency and safety.

“The standardisation of this advanced equipment by the union’s harbour pilots will significantly enhance pilotage safety in Mexican ports, aligning with international best practices,” said Captain Mario Alejandro Camacho, Secretary General of the Mexican Sindicato Nacional de Pilotos de Puerto.

“This initiative will empower members to address challenges posed by the increasing size of vessels.”
