Focus on green power

Companies are under pressure to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption but keep their services at a competitive level. At the same time ever stricter international standards are requiring more and more investments in environmental technologies.

The importance increasing efficiency and saving resources will be highlighted by leading international experts who will speak at the Global Maritime Environmental Congress (GMEC) on 6 September at SMM.

GMEC will address three key issues, harmful air emissions, big data and alternative energy.

Arsenio Domingues, IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC)’s chairman, will be a keynote speaker on the reduction of emissions alongside David Dingle, CEO of Carnival.

Mr Dingle will draw on his practical experience with his company allocating more than $400m to fit more than 70 cruise ships with emission control systems and flue gas cleaning equipment.

Martin Stopford will speak on the topic of big data, he believes that shipping is moving into a process of fundamental change, smart shipping. This therefore calls for investments in tools such as sensor-controlled information, satellite communication, data storage, user-friendly apps, IT systems and automation to keep up with the market.

Within the topic of alternative population systems, Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) will be examined and the use of LNG will be discussed.
