Green innovation up for efficiency awards
ABB has been shortlisted for a prestigious environmental award for modernising two vessels that will become the largest emission-free electric ferries in the world.
The nomination in the Energy Efficiency Solution category of the 2016 Ship Efficiency Awards for its work on Tycho Brahe and Aurora.
ABB will supply the complete power and propulsion systems for the two HH Ferries Group vessels, which will utilise turnkey ABB solutions including batteries, an energy storage control system and Onboard DC Grid technology. The new battery solution will help lower total emissions across the fleet by more than 50% from the current four diesel operated vessels.
At both ends of Denmark to Sweden route ABB will supply the first automated shore-side charging stations using an ABB industrial robot, to optimise connection time and maximise the charging period.
Meanwhile, I-Tech’s Selektope, which is used in marine antifouling coatings whose prevention of barnacle growth on ship hulls yields fuel savings, has been named as a finalist in the Environmental Technology category of the forthcoming Ship Efficiency Awards.
Other nominees in the Energy Efficiency Solution award short list are BMT Smart for Smart Fleet, Corvus Energy for its Orca Lithium Ion Energy Storage System and VAF Instruments for IVY Propulsion Performance Management.
Finalists in the Environmental Technology award short list include Bluewater Trade Winds Pvt for its Cargo Heating Management Service, Ecoslops for the Port of Sines Micro Refinery and Wärtsilä Seals & Bearings for the Wärtsilä Sternguard In-Water Serviceable Seal.
Meanwhile, the Initiative of the Year short list finalists include Akzonobel’s Marine Coatings Business, International for its Carbon Credits Initiative, DNV GL & HMD, MAN Diesel & Turbo, Becker Marine Systems for the Future Feeder: Con-Green 2000 Design, Flinter Management for the Big Data Collaboration and Research for Fuel Efficiency and the Smart Green Shipping Alliance Collaboration.
Carnival Plc, Stena Lines Group and Wallenium Wilhelmsen Logistics are up for the Sustainable Ship Operator of the Year award.
The Ship Efficiency Awards are part of Ship Efficiency: The Event 2016, which is a two day event running over 2 and 3 November, organised by Fathom Shipping.
