More carriers join CCWG
BSR’s motto that ‘what’s measured gets managed’ is proving successful, with more carriers joining its Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) in a bid to reduce the environmental impacts of global goods transportation.
Zim Integrated Shipping Services, Independent Container Lines and Arkas Container Transport have become the latest carriers to join the business-to-business initiative, which creates practical tools for measuring, evaluating and reporting emissions.
Angie Farrag, associate director, transportations and logistics, BSR, told GreenPort: “The priority now is to scale up shipper use of this data and support efforts to standardise emissions calculations across the entire logistics supply chain.”
The CCWG helps ocean freight carriers track and benchmark their performance, “understand the industry baseline”, and set reduction targets. By inputting primary data, carriers can discover “hotspots” in their performance, which can then be addressed to reduce their environmental footprint and meet customer demands.
Jonathan Morris, associate, advisory services at BSR, added: “Ports and terminals are invited to collaborate with the working group to raise the bar on environmental initiatives across the supply chain, and Clean Cargo is opening and associate member category in order to facilitate this exchange”.
CCWG has been collecting data for over five years. Based on its annual data collection process, the group has seen a collective 16% reduction in CO2 emissions across carriers since 2009, driven by changes in carrier representation or global trade conditions.
BSR’s latest annual trade lane emission factors aggregate will be published for the public in early September.
