New closed loop scrubber

The newly developed scrubber enables Langh Ship’s vessel, M/S Laura, to sail in both the North and Baltic Sea, where the sulphur limit is currently 1%, with whatever fuel the charterer has found in Rotterdam, no matter how high its sulphur content.

Laura Lang-Lagerlöf, commercial manager, Langh Ship, said: “Our goal was to create a scrubber that would change the ship’s properties as little as possible and barely affect its cargo capacity. And on M/S Laura, we really hit the nail on the head – you can’t even see the scrubber from the outside.”

Langh Ship’s new closed loop scrubber has been developed so the exhaust gas is cleaned in line with the requirements of the upcoming regulations, and the washing waters used in the method are also cleaned.

In addition, the cleaning system removes particles from the exhaust gas, even though this is not required by legislation.

Environmental regulations in the North Sea and Baltic Sea are to be tightened to 0.1% sulphur, starting from 2015.

The company plans to install scrubbers in its four other vessels.
