POLA Energy Management action plan

The E-MAP was unveiled during an energy workshop with port representatives, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and marine terminal operators.

It will be used to identify, develop and implement various programmes to improve energy efficiency, reliability, quality, cost and resiliency, while keeping up with the increase in electrification and energy demand as a result of shore power, electric cranes, yard tractors and future automation.

“We need to keep up with our ever growing power needs but we also need to improve our overall power profile to provide the best possible service to our customers,” said Geraldine Knatz, executive director, POLA. “Improving our energy resiliency will also reduce the port’s vulnerability in the case of natural or man-made events.”

E-MAP elements include assessing the port’s existing and future power demands and developing a contingency plan for resuming operations in the event of an unexpected loss in power and an Energy Technology Advancement Programme. This will be modelled on the current San Pedro Bay clean air programme.

A final plan is due to be presented to the Los Angeles Board of Harbour Commissioners later this year.
