Port of Rotterdam rewards Green LNG tankers
The Port of Rotterdam is to be the first port in the world to reward ocean-going LNG tankers which possess the Green Award certificate, it says.
The port authority will offer ship owners and charters who practice clean shipping a 6% discount on port dues when they arrive in Rotterdam via the gate terminal, which opened for LNG tankers in 2011.
The Green Award certificate is presented by the independent Green Award Foundation to ships and shipping companies which have made extra investments in a vessel and crew in order to improve their environmental performance, safety and quality.
The Green Award Foundation began to certify LNG tankers last year. A total of 36 LNG tankers have now been certified.
Tie Schellekens, press officer, Port of Rotterdam, told GreenPort: “Nowadays LNG tankers are very popular. As LNG is a very dangerous cargo for port authorities it is good to know that the cargo is in good hands when a ship has the Green Award certificate.”
He added: “Not all the LNG tankers are of the same quality. We hope in 2015 we can supply both inland vessels as seagoing vessels with LNG. And, of course, we will continue to promote clean shipping.”
Last year, the port awarded €1.5m in incentives to Green Award oil tankers and inland vessels.
