Roadmap to sustainable shipping

The SSI Roadmap embodies core attributes and values of the coalisition’s membership in working together to evaluate and establish changes that will need to be made to create the sustainable industry.

Alastair Fischbacher, CEO of SSI, said: “Our members have shown considerable commitment, as well as investing their knowledge and expertise to define a Roadmap, which truly encapsulated what needs to be delivered to create a more sustainable industry.”

“There are many challenges ahead, but we have set a clear foundation from which to work from.”

It was developed in line with SSI’s Vision 2040 and Case for Action, it focuses on six core areas that the shipping industry more work on.

Firstly, proactively contributing to the responsible governance of the oceans, and earning the reputation of being a trusted partner in the communities that shipping interacts with.

Providing healthy, safe and secure work environments, so that people want to work in shipping. As well as installing real transparency and accountability within the industry to drive performance improvements and enable better sustainable decision making.

It also says the shipping industry must work to implement developing financial solutions that reward sustainable performance and enable large scale update of innovation, technology, design and operational efficiencies.

Finally, the Roadmap includes changing to a diverse range of energy sources, using resources more efficiently, and responsibly, and dramatically reducing greenhouse gases.

Within all the areas it defines factors that are central to achieving them, including regulation, governance, infrastructure and emerging energy sources. As well as critical milestones that lead the way to success by 2040.
