Training centre to benefit Humber’s port

The £7m centre of excellence will include simulators for training maritime crew, truck and crane drivers. Modal Training will deliver realistic training to replicate the traditional working environment with the idea to increase employment in the industry.

Mike Parker, chair of the Humber LEP’s Employment and Skills Group pointed out that: “Logistics are vital to supporting the Humber’s growing renewables sector.”

“This will be a source of new career opportunities and will consolidate our status as the UK’s energy estuary. It is fantastic that we are marking another first for the Humber,” Mr Parker said.

The centre will be jointly funded by the Humber LEP and the Grimsby Institute, it will be located on Kings Road in Immingham.

Sam Whitaker, vice-principle for Strategic Projects at the Grimsby Institute and board member of Modal Training, said: “The Humber is already home to Britain’s largest, multi-purpose port complex which has supported a growing trade in coal, cars, food, freight, passengers and petroleum.”

With the area expanding further there is scope for the training centre to support the growing renewable sector in the Humber. Expanding further, the port aims to be the new hub for the emerging renewables sector.

“The task we have set ourselves is clear. To ensure that businesses operating in our ports energy and logistics sectors have access to the training support so that we can develop their existing teams, train new members and raise the profile of career opportunities,” added Mr Whitaker
