Liverpool awarded for sustainable development

Owner and operator Peel Ports triumphed in its category for the second time in four years at the global Containerisation International Awards.

Its £300m landmark terminal expansion project, Liverpool2, will create a state-of-the-art freight gateway as the UK’s most centrally located, deep water container terminal and will offer import and export companies located in the north west of the UK ‘ship-to-door’ solutions via sustainable transport routes such as the Manchester Ship Canal.

“We are immensely proud to receive this recognition for the second time and would like to applaud the hard work of our employees in delivering the major expansion programme at Liverpool2,” said Patrick Walters, group commercial director, Peel Ports.

“Our ambition is to offer Europe’s most efficient and modern port operation. Liverpool2 has been designed to meet the evolving needs of not just the shipping industry but the whole supply chain. We look forward to helping customers deliver their goods to market, with reduced costs, less congestion and lower carbon emissions,” he added.

Liverpool2 has been built on 17 hectares of reclaimed land and will allow the port to significantly increase cargo capacity and deal with 26,000 vessel movements annually. Infrastructure improvements since the project launched in 2014 include investment exceeding £100m in state-of-the art crane technology, a new Terminal Operating System (TOS) and AutoGates.

The Port of Liverpool’s Liverpool2 also won ‘Investment of the Year’ at the Echo Regional Business Awards.

The annual awards, hosted by Containerisation International, recognise excellence in the container shipping, ports and logistics industries from around the world, and are assessed by a select panel of distinguished judges.
