Co-operation reigns in South America

As a means of expanding volumes, while at the same time reducing costs, the Brazilian port of Rio Grande is to sign cooperation agreements with terminals in Montevideo and Buenos Aires.

The agreement, which will stress cooperation over competition between ports, is expected to be signed in July.

Rio Grande has a much deeper access channel than either Montevideo or Buenos Aires, so partially loaded vessels leaving these ports could fill up at Rio Grande, which could cut freight costs by 30%.
