GPS error results in revamped access road at Moín

In Costa Rica, the government has requested permission from APM Terminals Moín to build an access road connection to the new container terminal using part of the original concession area.

In order to do so, both entities need to sign an agreement that allows the construction company that is building the road to make use of APM Terminals’ environmental licence while it undertakes construction of an elevated section above the beach.

“This request from the government comes after they discovered a mistake with the design GPS that now forces the engineers to fix by 80 meters the curve that will connect to APM Terminals main gates. The route is a government obligation according to the contract we have with them and has to be ready by January 2018,” noted an APM Terminals spokesperson.

The error, which was due to poor original co-ordinates, first surfaced in October in a report drawn up by the state Comptroller, although the state had apparently been aware of the difference since 2015.

In total, the access road will be 2.8km long.

The corrections will not prove to be a problem, APM Terminals said to Port Strategy, given that the company enjoys good relations with the Costa Rican government.
