Iquique Phase 2 work to start early next year

Phase 2 development of Iquique port in northern Chile should start by October at the latest, according to Iquique Port Company (EPI), when the bidding process is expected to be launched.

Work will then start in the first half of next year once EPI has completed various technical and environmental studies.

One of the new characteristics of the work will be the addition of a new operating area on the quay itself, which will be supported on piles. This will have the effect of deepening the draft alongside Berth 1 to 15 metres. At the same time, supporting infrastructure will be put in place for the future installation of super post-panamax gantry cranes.

Separately, reconstruction work on Terminal 1, which previously suffered serious earthquake damage, is reported to be at an advanced stage and nearly 60% completed. It is due to be put back into service in October.
