Itaqui adds new general cargo terminal

In Brazil, the Port of Itaqui will start an auction for the concession of its new general cargo terminal in July. This is expected to mainly handle cellulose and paper.

Investment in the project, which will feature a warehouse, rail sidings and a dedicated berth, will need to be at least $62m. It will occupy an area of 53,545 sq m.

The deadline for bids has been set as July 27. The concession itself will initially be for 25 years, although clauses in the concession contract will allow that period to potentially be extended by a further 70 years.

According to Ted Lago, president of the port authority, Empresa Maranhense de Administração Portuária, the tender is the culmination of a number of projects launched by the port to expand its infrastructure. This final terminal, dedicated to cellulose, will consolidate this product’s export potential and boost the state economy.
