Lázaro Cárdenas tender back on the table

Mexican port authority API Lázaro Cárdenas, which operates Lázaro Cárdenas port, is preparing a tender to concession a second container terminal, commercial director Julián Pérez Rodríguez has confirmed.

The tender was originally slated for launch in July 2009 but was pushed back because of the financial crisis.

Bidding rules have already been drawn up and a tender for the concession will be launched in late March or early April, Mr Pérez Rodríguez said.

The 102ha terminal will have a 1.49km dock, and is expected to cost some Pesos6bn ($456m), to be financed by the concessionaire. The facility will have the capacity to handle 2m teu per year and is scheduled to begin operations in 2012.

Lázaro Cárdenas port handled 21% of teu entering Mexico in 2009, second only to Manzanillo. The port handled 591,467 teu last year, a 13% increase compared with the previous year.
