Manta out to tender yet again
Ecuadors Ministry of Transport and Public Works is to call a new tender for the expansion of the deep water port at Manta after Odebrecht pulled out, having failed to secure sufficient funding. The new construction company is also expected to be Brazilian.
Once the work is completed, the idea is to then offer the port as a concession to a private sector company.
In a previous tender, an HPH subsidiary was awarded a contract to implement the work and subsequently operate the port, only to later withdraw. Since then, several further attempts to both expand existing infrastructure and put the port out to concession have failed.
The cost of the current work has been estimated at $160m and authorities in Ecuador are confident that a new contract will be awarded in April-May this year. Work will then be completed within 24 months.
