Moín access delays could hinder APMT
A lack of financing is threatening to delay the construction of a much needed access road to Moín port in Costa Rica, according to local media reports.
The Public Works and Transport Ministry (MOPT) reportedly told Spanish language daily La Nación, that it does not have the financing to complete construction of route 257.
The government’s construction of the road was one of the conditions for the $1bn port concession with operating giant, APM Terminals.
The concern is that if construction of route 257 does not start by May 2016 it will be difficult for the project to be completed by the time APM’s new container terminal opens, which could lead to bottlenecks.
APM Terminals Moín is still being dredged and is not due to open until February 2018. An APM terminals spokesperson told Port Strategy: “We have merely communicated to the Costa Rica government the importance of the planning and execution of Route 257 which connects the port with Highway 32.”
We believe the Route 257 construction process should start by May 2016 and have been in talks with public agencies whose responsibility is stipulated in the concession contract.”
The Puerto Limón/Moín port complex is the largest in Costa Rica, handling 1.05 million teu in 2013.
