“Tacna already has the Tacna-Collpa (the border town with Bolivia) highway and is also studying construction of a deepwater port at Miguel Grau, whose exact profile we will have ready by the end of November, or by the end of the present year,” he said.

Mr Jiménez believed that this combined road and port infrastructure would boost commerce with Asia.

He also pointed to studies for a new rail link between Tacna-Ilo and Collpa, which will cross Bolivia and arrive in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. There is also to a proposed inter-coastal railway that will give access to the Port of Santos.

“This is a very important project and will be of great interest to Asian countries,” he said. A 110,000 ha industrial park would also be close to the proposed port.
