Ultramar worried by Chiles lack of long term port planning

“Unfortunately, in Chile, for quite some years, we have lost the capacity to put in place long term planning in respect of infrastructure,” he said, suggesting that this is because such large scale projects run beyond the average term in office served by politicians.

“What we have got to return to is having bodies in which both the public and private sector can work together on a plan that has a minimum horizon of 20 years.”

His remarks were in response to a question regarding the need to construct a new port to serve Chile’s central region, in which he suggested that the country needs such deep draft ports in both San Antonio and Valparaíso to handle up to 18,000 teu vessels, deployed on direct services to Asia.
