Venezuela confirms La Guaira expansion

Venezuelas transport and communications ministry has signed an agreement with the Portuguese government for an expansion project at La Guaira port in Vargas state.

The project will cost around $400m, transport and communications minister Francisco Garcés said in a statement published on the ministry’s website.

Work involves incorporating 23.7ha to the port’s existing area and will begin next year with completion in 2016.

The expansion will allow the port to receive ships carrying up to 6,500 teu, a big increase on the current limit of 2,000 teu, as well as faster movement.
