A water solution to cut costs
Associated British Ports (ABP), which received recommendations from the Carbon Trust, implementation of which resulted in an immediate 8% saving in energy consumption, has carried out extensive work to its water supply systems.
In 2007, ABP noted a marked increase in its water usage – it was 8.1% higher than the previous year due to two significant water leaks.
However, ongoing monitoring of water consumption rates enabled ABP to detect the leakages and now old pipework has been repaired or replaced.
This, together with other energy efficient initiatives, such as the installation of LED lighting systems, the implementation of energy awareness courses and the introduction of resource efficiency groups, led to a reduction in 2006 energy consumption and a financial saving of £400,000.
Electricity consumption last year was at 81.4kWh 0.2% less than that used in 2006 and 2008 figures look set to repeat the trend.
