Doing it by hand in Halifax
The Portof Halifax in Nova Scotia knows its workers like the backs of theirhands – and proves it by allowing (or denying) 4,000 of them access tothe right work area by scanning the vascular pattern on their hands.
Scanners capture the pattern, store it electronically, and then compare it with the hand of an individual seeking access. A match is made with 0.1 of a second, say the manufacturer Identica Corp.
“Vascular biometrics is the ideal solution for secure access control in a working environment as it is more accurate and doesn’t have the well known operational difficulties of other biometric technologies,” says Gord Helm, manager Marine Security and Cruise Operations with Halifax Port Authority. “Identica’s vascular biometric technology provides complete technological competence and easily integrates into our current system.”
