DP World gives back to communities

Terminal operator DP Worlds fourth Global Volunteer Week programme saw employees across the world deliver over 60 projects in partnership with 47 organisations, bringing benefits to more than 5,000 people and clocking up a new record of nearly 4,700 volunteer hours during work time.

In the Dominican Republic, volunteers visit a home for elderly people

Staff took part in projects across 19 countries during the charitable week, held this year from December 3 to 9, with volunteer work including arranging blood donations in Chennai, Nhava Sheva, Cochin and Mundra in India; sorting packages for foodbanks in Australia; visiting elderly people in Yantai in China; organising free medical examinations in Senegal; and delivering career workshops in the Dominican Republic.

The event, which was developed around the United Nations’ International Volunteer Day, lets DP World employees take time out of work to help their local communities.

Kathryn Wightman-Beaven, DP World’s global sustainability director, said that the amount of volunteering hours undertaken this year was more than double the figure from when the venture was launched in 2014.

“We’re proud of our employees, who contribute every day to our goal of building vibrant and resilient societies through investing in issues of social importance,” she said.

“We are committed to helping improve the lives of people in the communities in which we operate and look forward to developing this programme further to deliver even bigger impact in the coming years.”

DP World group chairman and chief executive Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem said: “Our commitment to sustainability is central to our business, and by playing a major role in contributing to societies, our people are helping others.

“Their enthusiasm and willingness to participate in local activities is admirable.”

Global Volunteer Week forms part of DP World’s global programme aimed at bringing sustainability into every aspect of the business’ work.
