Transas has announced the Multi-purpose Terminal Simulator in cooperation with Kymenlaakso Polytechnic. The new product replicates tankerloading principles, while the simulation of terminal operators'' and tanker cargo mates'' interaction is also available. The Multi-purpose Terminal Simulator is meant primarily for educating terminal operators. The key goal of education, says Transas, is training and working out the supervisory cargo master skills.

Kotka Terminal Simulator: different scenarios and limitations

While training, the company says, the following skills are formed: operating and terminal capacity distribution, as well as the ability to monitor and memorise all the operations occurring in the complicated pipe net of terminal systems; and to react adequately to technological and weather changes, taking the systems technical capabilities into consideration. In addition, the trainee is required to evaluate the possible consequences of personnel operations, as well as changes in the technological operation chain, plus new possibilities and limitations.

Real tanker loading/ unloading exercises at the terminal can be united in one technological cycle, or applied as separate exercises. The simulator allows the downloading of an exercise, which describes the initial condition and approximate training scenario. Instructors can change the course of exercises and bring in different scenarios and limitations.

The new simulator allows operations to be carried out on normal and emergency maintenance of terminal systems aimed at preventing oil spills. The second stage of the project will be the creation of an integrated education tool for the elimination of oil spill consequences by advanced interaction with navigational and spill response simulators.
