Khalifa Port set for car terminal
Abu Dhabi Ports and Barcelona vehicle terminal Autoterminal have signed a shareholder agreement to manage a car/ro-ro terminal at the UAE's Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi under a 15-year concession.
The new facility will be 300,000 square metres and have over 550 metres of dedicated quay positioned in Khalifa Port, with a joint venture company called Autoterminal Khalifa Port being created by the management deal.
The car terminal will offer "a geostrategic location for import traffic which will benefit from the 100 square kilometre-Khalifa Port Free Trade Zone, the largest free zone in the region that is fully integrated with one of the fastest-growing ports in the world", said the companies.
The companies also claimed that the facility will afford added-value services to all its car terminal users for vehicle-customisation, PDI inspections and additional technical services.
Currently, Autoterminal, which is part of the Noatum Maritime Group and is located in the Port of Barcelona, serves as an intermodal transport centre for vehicles by sea, road and rail.
The companies defined the shareholder deal's main short-term objectives as delivering the same quality-level that Autoterminal offers its Port of Barcelona clients and positioning Khalifa Port as the regional hub for all commercial trade routes in the Red Sea, East Africa and the Gulf.
