The Port of New York & New Jersey has implemented a $1.66m channel-deepening programme which will be completed in 2014. This is a joint project between the port authority, which will finance half the cost, and the US Army Corps of Engineers, with the Federal Government providing matching funding.
The Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) is in the throes of swapping maritime land known as the Pier 98 Annex to the SYSCO Corporation, a domestic food distribution company.
The new 50ft (15.24 metres) deep channel will improve navigational safety and enable the port to accept significantly larger vessels.
