Socep chooses Konecranes for crane upgrade

This upgrade aims to enhance performance, extend the crane’s operational life and ensure continued access to spare parts and technical support.

Socep, operating two high-volume cargo terminals at the largest port on the Black Sea, handles 500,000 teu annually.

“We are the leading port terminal operator in the region, so our customers expect a highly productive, cost efficient and sustainable operation,” said Aura Dinu, maintenance project manager, Socep.

The crane had become unsupported by its original manufacturer, but the body remained in good condition. Rather than replacing the entire crane, Socep opted for the Konecranes retrofit, part of the Konecranes Any Brand series. The retrofit involved replacing the crane’s AC drives, optimising operations and simplifying maintenance.

“We can continue to use a familiar crane, but its handling is smoother, maintenance is easier and our commitment to sustainability is clear,” said Dinu.

After a few months of use, performance and productivity improved, and with long-term technical support guaranteed, the upgrade is expected to extend the crane’s lifespan by 10-15 years.

The retrofit replaces obsolete components, ensuring that spare parts are always available and minimising downtime. Additionally, the system includes TRUCONNECT remote monitoring for digital performance reports and further maintenance assistance.

“At only a fraction of the price of a new crane, Socep now have the latest drive systems from Konecranes on their non-Konecranes STS,” said Neil Griffiths, service agreements director, Port Services, Konecranes.

“This retrofit is an important step in their plans for sustainable profitability and growth as they maximise the lifetime of their existing resources.
