The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) recently won the Lloyd’s List global award in the ‘Environment’ category for its leadership in adopting and promoting reduced emissions within the maritime industry.
The port won the award for its green initiative and participation in the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) and annual funding of the Technology Advancement Programme (TAP), through which it encourages the development of new technologies to reduce emissions in ports. Over the past year, TAP demonstrations have included an electric drayage truck, a Tier IV retrofit for locomotives and sea scrubbers on ships.
Richard Meade, editor, Lloyd’s List, said: “The fact that the Port of Los Angeles has supporting evidence of up to a 75% reduction in emissions since 2005 caught the attention of our judges. Through innovative programmes and international collaboration, the Port of Los Angeles is rightly recognised as an environmental leader and role model for other ports.”
The POLA was also awarded for its international collaborative efforts and its role in a new Environmental Ship Index (ESI) programme which encourages the use of cleaner technology and the practising of reducing emissions through financial incentives.
The port also plans to provide additional incentives to ships with Tier 2 and 3 engines and ships that participate in TAP demonstrations.
