Altamira Terminal Portuaria (ATP) has completed a 350-metre dock expansion at the Port of Altamira on Mexico’s east coast, significantly increasing the terminal’s operational capacity.

The new waterfront extends the terminal’s existing 600 metres of berth, expanding capacity by a third as part of a broader growth programme.

Altamira Terminal Portuaria has completed a 350-metre dock expansion, boosting capacity and strengthening Mexico’s east coast logistics hub

ATP, the terminal’s owner and operator, led the expansion project, with CIMESA serving as the main construction contractor.

ShibataFenderTeam provided site-specific fender engineering for the new berth, designing systems to perform reliably during container vessel operations. The installation includes 14 Cone Fender Systems (SPC 1000) fitted with closed-box steel panels measuring 2200 by 2560 millimetres, as well as 14 T-Head bollards with a mooring capacity of 200 tonnes.

A notable feature of the new dock is a corner located mid-alignment, a geometric configuration that affects vessel approach angles and the way ships interact with the fender systems. Variations in berthing angles can create uneven load distributions, requiring additional engineering attention.

To manage these conditions, ShibataFenderTeam designed two reinforced fender systems for positions closest to the corner. These units incorporate upgraded anchorage and chain configurations to safely accommodate higher loads expected during berthing in this area.

The expanded dock represents the Port of Altamira’s third major berth and reinforces its role as one of Mexico’s leading multimodal logistics hubs.
