Breaking ground on APMT MVII expansion

The work, to be conducted in close cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the CareGo consortium, will see APM Terminals MVII grow to become the largest and most efficient automated APM terminal in Europe.

“Today we celebrate an important milestone in the 25-year collaboration between APM Terminals and the Port of Rotterdam Authority,” said Boudewijn Siemons, chief executive of the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

“APM Terminals has played an important role in the development of the container segment in the port of Rotterdam and will continue to do so. Investments such as these are crucial to ensure that the port remains attractive as a business location and maintains its position as a reliable and resilient container hub in Northwest Europe.”

The expansion of APM Terminals Maasvlakte II includes an additional 51 hectares with 1,000 metres of deep-sea quay, new truck and rail transhipment zones and fully electrified infrastructure. Equipment upgrades include the latest generation of automatic terminal trucks and emission-free automated guided vehicles.

“Building a fully automated container terminal of this size in such a short period of time is a challenging but also wonderful assignment,” said Sander Lindemans, project director, CareGo.

“The new terminal is both highly sustainable and innovative. Dura Vermeer, GMB and ABB, the participating companies in the construction consortium, have proven that they can handle a project of this size.”

The first phase of the expansion is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
