Peel Ports Group, the UK’s second-largest port operator, has appointed Gavin Laybourne as its first-ever chief technology and information officer, marking a major milestone in the company’s digital transformation.
Laybourne will join the executive team to lead all technology, IT, cybersecurity and digital initiatives, supporting Peel Ports’ growth and sustainability goals.
“Gavin’s leadership will be central to future-proofing our business,” said chief executive Claudio Veritiero.
“His vision for technology-led growth aligns perfectly with our £1 billion investment plan for the next five years, he added, emphasising the importance of innovation in building an agile, automated and sustainable port ecosystem.
Laybourne brings over 25 years of technology leadership experience, including recent roles as global chief information officer at Maersk APM Terminals and chief information officer at Marks & Spencer. He had also held senior technology positions at Shell.

“Ports are not only gateways of trade but also hubs of innovation. My focus will be on driving innovation through automating terminal processes, integrating AI and IoT, and strengthening cybersecurity.”
The appointment comes as Peel Ports continues to modernise operations across its UK port network. The group says it aims to position itself at the forefront of digital innovation in the maritime and logistics sector.
