Valenciaport is embarking on an ambitious project to develop its own 5G network, designed to operate independently of external operators and enhance the port’s digital capabilities.

With over 25,000 devices expected to be connected, including phones, vehicles, drones, surveillance cameras and environmental sensors, the network is set to be a pivotal tool in the port’s evolution into a Smart Port or Port 4.0.

Valenciaport is developing its own 5G network

With an estimated budget of nearly €6 million, the project is being co-financed by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility and is slated for completion by 2027.

“5G will allow us to configure the technological future of the Port of València, a future that will provide advanced connectivity for the improvement of innovation and the definitive digital transformation,” said the Port Authority of València’s director, Enrique Belda.

The 5G network will use n40 frequencies, ensuring privacy and security within the port, with customised controls over connected devices. More than fifteen n40 base stations will be deployed across the port, offering nearly complete coverage.

The network will operate on a stand-alone mode with a maximum throughput of 10 Gbps, supporting at least 25,000 connected devices.

Valenciaport will initially test the network with use cases for police surveillance and remote maintenance. The broader goal is to implement advanced services such as digital twinning, intelligent surveillance and collision risk detection.
