“We offer professional services such as project management and training to guide new and existing customers through their implementation phases,” says Todd Boone.

As with all technologies, Wi-fi is going through a lot of evolutionary improvements, he says.

“First was 801.11 (2Mb/sec throughput), then 802.11b (11Mb/sec), and now 802.11a/b/g with throughputs of up to 54Mb. The next generation of Wi-fi will probably be 802.11n, which promises greater coverage range and even higher throughputs.”

Companies are always looking for ways to optimise and streamline their businesses and technology is an important factor in this quest, says Mr Boone. “Wi-fi is one technology in the Psion Teklogix portfolio for ports and container yards and it helps enable several applications in ports, such as security cameras, DGPS applications, TOS and others. The benefits are improved inventory, better planning, better security for workers and many more. We are constantly on the lookout for new and better technologies.”

Psion has recently completed wireless installations for Georgia Port Authority, covering GPA’s entire 850-acre site, and for Marseille Fos. Its Modulus platform for mobile computers allows for each device to expand as the port’s needs evolve.
