The Port of Savannah''s Garden City Terminal is to gain 10 new Konecranes rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes after the Georgia Ports Authority''s (GPA) Board of Directors gave the green light to the purchase.

The cranes, which will be delivered in two batches of five during the first half of next year, will bring Garden City Terminal's fleet to 156 RTGs from the Finnish company.

The products will handle containers in three new container rows that will boost annual capacity at the Port of Savannah by 150,000 teu.

They will work over stacks that are five containers high and six containers deep, with a truck lane running alongside the stacks.

The products will also have a lifting capacity of 50 metric tonnes and be able to operate on electricity with cable-reel readiness.

Commenting on the GPA approval, Tuomas Saastamoinen, Konecranes Port Solutions' senior vice president for sales and marketing, said that it has been "tremendously satisfying" to see the Port of Savannah's growth and success over the years.

"I hope and believe that the GPA will break the 4m-teu threshold this fiscal year (July 1, 2017–June 30, 2018), as anticipated," he said.

"The new Konecranes RTGs will be part of this continuing success story.”
