The ports of Los Angeles (POLA) and Long Beach (POLB) recently announced the winners of the fifth annual ‘Clean Air Action Awards’ for their use of shore power.
Six companies were awarded for their efforts at reducing air pollution with the help of Cavotec’s Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) technology. Global shipping lines APL and Matson Navigation Company, and energy major BP were those companies awarded primarily for their use of shore power systems which enable vessels to switch off their engines while moored and connect to shore side electricity.
J Christopher Lytle, POLB Executive Director, said: “We’re delighted to honour these companies for taking the time and effort to successfully reduce their environmental impacts through leadership and quick action.”
Geraldine Knatz, POLA executive director, added: “We continue to see significant year-over-year pollution reductions at the port complex.”
The ports commended APL for optimising its environmental performance by powering its ships with low-sulphur fuel. Matson was praised for fitting its vessels with shore power systems and regularly using shore power at their Long Beach berths. BP was also praised for its tanker facility at POLB – the only berth in the world to offer ships shore power connection.
The other three winners were SA Recycling, Harley Marine Services and Pacific Harbor Line.
