A containerised petroleum residue reclamation unit for ports has won an innovation award for its ability to sustainably recycle fossil fuels.

The Ecoslops Mini-P2R won the Ocean Innovation Trophy in the reducing the use of fossil energies category at the first instalment of the Ocean Innovation Awards organised by ADECAN in partnership with the French Maritime Cluster, Energies de la Mer and the Oceanographic Institute in Monaco.

Created in 2018, the Trophées de l'Innovation Océan are intended to help promote innovations or innovative actions, as long as they exploit marine renewable energies, reduce the use of fossil fuels, reduce marine pollution, preserve biodiversity, sustainably exploit ocean resources, protect coastlines, or raise public awareness of ocean protection.

New segment

Ecoslops first started studies for the Mini-P2R back in 2017. It’s a unit designed to process 4 to 8,000 tonnes per year (Ecoslops' flagship system, the P2R has a capacity of 30,000 tonnes or more), targeting medium-sized ports.

Because it caters for a new segment, the Mini-P2R has increased Ecoslops’ addressable market, profiting from the P2R know-how, which was first installed at Portugal’s Port of Sines back in 2015.

The Mini-P2R is less capital intensive and contributes a regular stream of revenues from the sale of equipment and services for ports.

Last year, Ecoslops established an oil residue waste processing unit with Total Group in La Mède, near Marseilles and set up a micro-refinery unit in the Port of Antwerp.
