Greece and Israel talk become innovation partners

This new cooperation is pioneering as it focuses on innovation, which at the same time, will see both parties undertake joint initiatives, aiming to respond to issues related to sustainability, which concern the broader port and maritime transport sector.

In addition, the agreement provides for the joint implementation of networking activities, the participation in international projects and the exchange of knowledge and best practices enabling ThPA S.A. to test innovative technologies and ideas through Ashdod port’s maritime technology hub.

Bilateral relations

The signing of the agreement between ThPA S.A. and Ashdod Port Company Ltd inaugurates a strong regional cooperation, between two of the most important ports of the wider Mediterranean region, also further strengthening the bilateral relations between Greece and Israel.

Thessaloniki is no stranger to digital innovation. It took part in the iTerminals 4.0 project which was awarded funding in mid-2018 by the EU Connecting Europe Facility. Programme.

The iTerminals 4.0 project saw new IoT solutions and operational pilots developed and deployed in eight container terminals situated in eight core ports of the Trans-European Transport Network: Thessaloniki being one of them.

Meanwhile, in 2022 Ashdod Port invested NIS4.5 million (€1.28 million) in four start-ups operating within the port’s technology incubator.

The incubator has nurtured more than 60 start-ups in various fields including operations, logistics, cyber protection and safety.
