A Russian port could see its atmospheric emissions reduced by 90% as part of a USD$25.2m investment.
Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK) plans to spend the cash on environmental protection activities in the Port of Murmansk, reported TASS.
"Twelve different environment protection activities amounting to 1.5 bln rubles ($25.2 mln) have been prepared and undergo implementation in the Murmansk port within the framework of the Year of Ecology. They will enable reduction of atmospheric emissions by 90%,” said the company, according to TASS.
The protection activities include construction of a 6m 2,400m long wall to contain dust from piles. The wall is expected to lead to a 200-fold reduction of dust erosion and building work will begin this autumn.
Eliminating dust
In addition, 20m high windproof screens designed to eliminate dust escape beyond the port will also be installed around the port’s coal terminal.
According to TASS, deputy chief executive officer of SUEK, Denis Ilatovsky, said: "We analysed (sic) 15 largest ports of the globe with the total freight turnover over 600 mln tonnes of coal for selection of the best available technologies and developed an action plan for the best dust suppression technologies, which reduce the environmental impact to effective international standards."
2017 was declared the ‘Year of Ecology’ by Russian president Vladimir Putin.
The project aims to draw public attention towards environmental issues, support the protection of ecological and biological diversity and reinforce the ecological security of Russia.
