Wärtsilä has formed a coalition with other marine industry players to increase the adoption of LNG as a marine fuel.

SEA/LNG aims to improve the environmental performance of the shipping industry by breaking down the barriers that are currently preventing the development of LNG in more marine applications.

Other partners in the SEA/LNG coalition include Carnival Corporation, DNV-GL, ENGIE, ENN Group, GE Marine, GTT, Lloyds Register, Mitsubishi, NYK Line, Port of Rotterdam, Qatargas, Shell Downstream and Tote.

LNG’s environmental advantages for shipping are huge, but heavy fuel oil remains the predominant fuel used.

NOx emissions are cut by approximately 85%, SOx emissions are almost completely eliminated since natural gas contains no sulphur, and particle production is practically non-existent, when LNG is used.

The main areas of focus for the coalition include support for the development of LNG bunkering in major ports and educating stakeholders as to the risks and opportunities in the use of LNG fuel.

Wärtsilä has also recently entered into an agreement with Cavotec to develop innovative wireless charging and automated mooring technologies.

The agreement incorporates Wärtsilä’s innovative wireless vessel charging system and Cavotec’s automated mooring technology MoorMaster. Its first prototype is scheduled for installation in Norway during the first half of 2017.
