Waterson Terminal Services is joining the Green Marine environmental certification programme for its stevedoring and terminal operations at ProvPort, Rhode Island.
The programme is a voluntary initiative to exceed regulatory requirements within the maritime industry and Waterson is the first terminal operator from the state to join.
“We are always looking for ways to improve our operations and joining a well-recognised sustainability programme such as Green Marine will allow us to exceed environmental standards,” said Waterson Terminal Services general manager, Christopher Waterson.
“The clear criteria beyond current regulations will help guide our actions towards continually improving our environmental performance.”
David Bolduc, Green Marine’s executive director, welcomed its newest member.
“We’re so pleased to have Waterson Terminal Services in the programme, and we hope it inspires other maritime stakeholders on the US east coast to look at what Green Marine has to offer in helping to achieve greater sustainability.”
There are currently more than 125 companies including ship owners, port authorities, terminal operators and shipyard managers in Canada and the United States participating in the certification programme.
Green Marine provides a template for port authorities, terminal operators, shipping lines and shipyard managers to voluntarily reduce their environmental footprint, addressing such issues as lowering air emissions and minimising community impacts.
