APM Terminals has signed a two-year contract with Amsterdam based NV Nuon Energy for wind powered generated electricity to power the new cranes and handling equipment at the new Maasvlakte II terminal.
The operator said that this will make the new terminal, which is due to receive its first commercial vessel this month, the first to achieve zero emissions on and off site. All of its terminal electricity will be 100% sustainably sourced.

Maasvlakte II will achieve zero emissions on site through the electrification of all of its quay and yard cranes and the use of a fleet of 37 battery powered Lift-Automatic Guided Vehicles (Lift-AGVs) which will transport containers to the yard from the quay.
APMT has also leased 35 e-NV200 electric vehicles from Nissan for the transportation of personnel and staff at the terminal. The operator will be among the very first users of the vehicles, which feature very low noise levels and zero emissions, in the Netherlands.
NV Nuon Energy is part of Sweden’s Vattenfall AB and is one the Netherland’s three largest energy companies.
