Despite inconsistent growth, overall volumes have increased from 24.7 million TEU in 2018 to over 31 million TEU in 2023, though the Red Sea crisis has caused setbacks, notably an 82.7% drop at King Abdullah Port in 2024.

The crisis has shifted traffic towards ports like Khalifa and Jeddah, prompting ongoing expansion projects such as Jebel Ali’s Terminal 4 and Salalah’s US$300 million upgrade. These developments include automation, sustainable initiatives, and infrastructure upgrades aimed at boosting capacities and operational efficiency. Despite regional turbulence, investments continue, reflecting the strategic importance of Middle Eastern ports in global trade.

This resilience underscores the region’s commitment to expanding port infrastructure, ensuring they remain vital links connecting eastern and western markets in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
