New RMGs at CCX

Three new automated rail mounted gantry (RMG) cranes are bringing state-of-the-art, emission-free container handling to a port in North Carolina.

The CSX Carolina Connector Intermodal Terminal (CCX) in Rocky Mount has taken receipt of the widespan Liebherr RMGs which each have a span of 50.29 metres, a lift height over rail of 15.24 metres and cantilevered outreaches both sides with a safe working load of 40.6 tonnes. The machines will work five rail lines and a four-high, five-wide container stack, with a further two rail lines under one of the cantilevers.

The cabinless RMGs have been supplied with Liebherr Remote Operator Stations for supervised moves and exception handling whilst an industrial data centre and a high-speed fibre network anchor the automated crane operations and communications.

A 3D measurement system scans the operational area, creating and updating profiles of container stacks, railcars and hazards, providing data for path planning and automatic operation whilst XYZ crane positioning is provided by Infrared spreader tracking, RFID gantry and trolley positioning technologies supported by encoders.

Safety features include a Yardeye system which monitors operational traffic and both GNSS and RFID are used to track the position, heading and velocity of equipped vehicles in the yard in real time.

The automated RMG includes 3D stack and train profiling for optimal path planning, increasing productivity and throughput and reducing energy consumption. The Liebherr drive system with active front end and simultaneous motion also allows power usage to be optimised and regenerated energy fed back to the grid.
