Shanghai overtakes Singapore

Shanghai handled 2.64m teu in August, up 20.5% from the same month a year earlier, reported the Straits Times. This beat the 2.43m boxes moved through Singapore, which grew 6.6% from a year earlier. Shanghai’s container throughput in the first eight months of 2010 totalled 19.06m teu, compared with Singapore’s 19.01m teu.

Further, Shanghai’s two core facilities are still expanding. In August, the Yangshan Port Area’s total throughput reached 960,800 teu, up almost 37% year on year. The Waigaoqiao Port Area saw a throughput of more than 1.3m teu, up more than 14% compared to the same period of the previous year.
