Yangtze venture on the cards for APMT

APM Terminals is looking at possible Chinese river port ventures, specifically in the Yangtze.

There are a number of ports that will develop with China’s Yangtze initiative underway

It seems that ports such as Chongqing may be in view for APM Terminals’ interest. This in particular is the biggest inland river port in western China, and an integral part of the central government’s push into China’s interior.

It plays well into what Christian Laursen of APMT says is the company’s focus on the “special opportunities” that exist for terminal operating companies in economically emerging markets, even while taking care about mitigating the inevitable risks also associated with such investments.

The Yangtze has its own challenges, and much, like maintenance of navigation will be negotiated with the Chinese authorities. Mr Laursen adds, “Global port and terminal operators have a lot of capabilities to offer in emerging markets, but these markets need to create an environment conducive to infrastructure investment on the part of operators.”

APM Terminals has taken a strategic initiative in other emerging economies, showing success in Indian operations such as Pipavav.
