Yangtze gets deeper approach
The dredging work on the approach channel of Shanghai’s Waigaoqiao terminal has recently been completed, increasing the water level to 12.5 metres, according to China Transport News.
David Lammie of Yangtze Business Services explains that this means that fourth- and fifth-generation container vessels anchoring at Waigaoqiao can carry an extra 700 standard containers.
This particular project has been carried out as part of the Yangtze Mouth Deep Water Dredging project that has increased the water level to 12.5 metres up to Taicang.
Alongside this, a total of Rmb18bn (USD$2.77bn) has also been earmarked by the Ministry of Transport and Jiangsu province’s local government for deepening the navigation channel at the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
Chen Yuanhua, deputy director of the Nanjing Yangtze River Waterway Bureau, said the project would allow 50,000-ton vessels to sail from the mouth of the river all the way up to Nanjing, capital city of Jiangsu province. The work will start at the end of this year and is expected to be completed by 2015.
