Santos sees low sulphur fuel trial

Fleet owner Hamburg Süd trialled a low sulphur fuel (LSMGO) on a container ship while transiting the port of Santos, en route between the US Gulf and America’s east coast.

Michelle DePass of the US Environmental Protection Agency – the body which arranged the test – said that the point of this fuel switching project was to “yield emissions data to show US, Mexican and Brazilian policy makers that real reductions can be achieved by burning lower-sulphur fuels near their coastlines.”

This is the first low sulphur trial for Santos, although other trials have taken place in the ports of Veracruz, Altamira and Houston.

Along with Hamburg Süd, these tests have also been supported by the US Maritime Administration, and the Mexican environmental agency.
